Overview – Root Canals
A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

Description
The term “root canal” is used to describe the natural cavity within the center of the tooth. The pulp, or pulp chamber, is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth’s nerve lies within the root canal.

A tooth’s nerve is not vitally important to a tooth’s health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is sensory – to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.

The signs that a root canal is needed, are:

– Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure.

– Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures (after the hot or cold has been removed).

– Discoloration (a darkening) of the tooth.

– Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.

– Sometimes, a persistent or recurring pimple on the gums.

Only one visit is necessary to Costa Rica for a root canal. During your visit you will receive an examination, x-rays, and a full discussion about the root canal procedure.

Procedure
The first step in a root canal procedure is for the dentists to take an x-ray to see the shape of the canal and determine if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone. A local anesthesia is used to numb the area near the tooth. Occasionally, anesthesia may not be necessary, since the nerve is dead, but anesthesia is used anyway to anesthetize the area and make you feel more relaxed and at ease.

An access is created to the canal, and once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, it is sealed.

Number of Days
Only one visit is necessary to Costa Rica for the Root Canal procedure and you will be here for only 1 day. You should allow one day for arrival, so 2 days will be the full total.

If you have other combinations of medical or dental procedures in mind, we will write to you with the total number of days needed for the combination.
